We travelled ever westward
Across the broad expanse
We built our sturdy homesteads
And cattle ranches too
Rifles at the ready
Real or imagined
On mountains, on the plains
A show for all our loved ones
We sought out every native
Who fought to stay alive
On teeming hunting grounds
We killed their bison herds
While carving out new rules
Defining this new culture
We the white-skinned heroes
And quickest on the draw
In lawless western towns

We reached the far Pacific
To create our Movieland
To send the message forth
Through cowboy hero/actors
Handsome, slim and righteous
In Golden Globe attire
And quick to draw their guns
Ever on the ready
Well-armed for massacres
While every Saturday
The little children stride
To their nearest movie house
Eager would-be cowboys
Clutching all their coins
In grubby little hands
To learn, adore, absorb
The essence of our culture
Our own mythology
Cowboy mania
