The Evidence

Mickey J. Corrigan

Consider the gun
stolen
by a friend
from a friend’s dad
in the brown paper bag
in the dented locker
at school.
Consider the expulsion,
the suspension
a droplet in a dark pool
unseen, spreading
humiliation
ridicule, threats
of military school.
Consider the boy’s bedroom
a new rifle
a Glock pistol
ammo stockpiled
shooting lessons
visits to psychiatrists,
special education, help.
Consider the good parents
considerate parents
on the bathroom floor
gaping holes in the back
of their middle-aged heads.
Consider the trench coat
the knives and loaded weapons
1127 rounds
up and down hallways
the shots and screams
blood splattering tile.
Watch a fellow student
shot in the chest
tackle the shooter,
pinning him down
until help arrives.
I want to consider
that boy,
his lung collapsed
his young arms pressed
against the killer’s throat.

A 15-year-old student was suspended from Thurston High School in Springfield, Oregon, for having a loaded weapon in his locker. On May 21, 1998, he shot and killed his parents before returning to school armed with two pistols, a rifle, and hunting knives. He roamed the grounds, killing 2 students and wounding 25. While he reloaded, a wounded student tackled him, then 6 others piled on, holding the shooter until help arrived. The shooter is now serving a 111-year prison sentence.
