The Rabbit

John Yotko

I was on the farm in western Pennsylvania
Walking out of the mown hay fields into the woods
Hunting for rabbit I scanned the ground
Looking for motion or that brown grey rock
Against the bright orange and red leaves
That brown grey rock that looks too smooth
Too perfect for these hills

I heard a shuffle in the leaves and looked to my right
Raised the shotgun to my shoulder and pointed
at the rabbit now frozen like a statue

Have you ever heard a rabbit cry?
I thought of how it felt when I was a small child
And a bee stung me on the lip and I cried out for my mother

Have you ever heard a rabbit cry?
I thought of my younger sister when she fell
And her face hit a bucket and she cried out for our mother

Have you ever heard a rabbit cry?
It sends a chill deep into your heart,
It’s cry moves you in a way you could not expect
When I hear the rabbit cry I could not shoot
It brought the shotgun down out of my shoulder
I turned and walked back to cross the hay field
Returned to the house
And wondered where our place in nature really is
