On a hill by the seaside
above where the sand ends
and a loamy earth begins
long, stringy, wet green grass grows
Pushed flat by the wind
but seemingly never dried out
no matter how hot and white, the sun.

Thick meaty worms writhe
in a kind of dance, wrapping around each other
sightless, eyeless, senseless wonders
until the bare foot steps, crushing
A juicy explosion of life extinguished
Sticky wetness along the sole and between
the toes.

Seemingly from nowhere, ants appear
like old men in the park when a bottle is cracked
Natures vacuum cleaners begin to carry
away the carnage to feast upon
So soon there is no evidence
No memory of a living creature’s life
Snuffed.
