The Crown

Shiftless, quarantined, not supposed to go outside
reading the news constantly - how many more infections
today? A church in the south, no a cult, spreading
disease throughout the region, but what if
he really is the messiah and all this is to call his faithful home?

Browser tab constantly open to the page that tells who is sick
How many now, I wonder, five seconds after checking last
Five of us trapped in a small apartment, afraid to
go outside. Days spent reading about the sick and sicker
and trying to read books to the kids
but they can’t pay attention and I can’t focus

Begin each day reading about new infected cases near me
There is always an accounting, a travelogue
which explains where the victim (victim?!) had been
in the two weeks preceding the diagnosis
It is incredibly detailed:
“Took a taxi at 12:47pm from Bupyeong District office to Bupyeong Market
(paid cash)”

I realize how small and pathetic my own life is
and begin fearing infection - not because of
the realization of my own mortality
but because I don’t want others to read about
my comings and goings over the past two weeks
To see my private shame, going nowhere, doing nothing
