When You Suggested Sex

I gripped my lower lip
in my teeth
and bit down hard.
I dug my long fingernails
into my palms,
made two fists
minus my thumbs.
My toes pressed back
against the soles
that supported them.
And my nerves
jabbed at my heart
like needles.
My veins short-circuited.
No blood flowed to my brain.
It went beyond uncertainty,
beyond fear,
into an all-out war
between various body parts.
Not one was willing to surrender.
My throat most of all.
The word “yes”
was stuck there.
With your kiss goodbye,
I gulped it back down.
