Along for the ride

I wish I knew where anxiety came from,
does it ride along with age?
Perhaps age drives and anxiety calls shotgun.
Age tromps on the gas and they speed
along life’s highway. Anxiety flicks cigarette
butts and tosses food wrappers out the window
shouting rude remarks at other drivers.

Age bears down on the steering wheel
rocking in his seat attempting to will the car faster.
Age won’t slow down, recklessly running red lights,
stop signs, exceeding town speed limits and
passing school buses that are off loading children.

Anxiety is feeding constantly. Getting larger
by the second. He’s expanding onto
age’s side of the car. Crowding age
against the driver’s door.

Sitting in the back seat, wisdom
is quietly wondering if she’s
clever enough and strong enough
to shove anxiety out onto the highway.
Then convince age to relax, take it easier.
I think she is and I pray she doesn’t
wait too long.
