Before the Verdict

There is something close to my heart, I cannot see
For the snow stinging – blinding, blinding in sheets
So hard.

There’s something in the dark telling me,
In the air a shushshsh coming, coming from the sea
So far.

They say life’s a “blink”, a “candle snuffed out”
We’re here... we’re gone in a galloping, galloping rout,
So hard.

Getting the news today: the jury sequestered:
A reprieve of leave? or death sentence foster festering,
So far.

What fork pendulum pick in swing of the road:
Exit to innocence be, or guilt carrying, carrying its load?
So hard.
