How God catches us cheating

Casey Killingsworth

Our roof mostly works, especially
on sunny days, but still we argue
about the leaks like we’re charged
with apportioning a map with
new countries. Do you know
how many buckets you could
fill the attic with for the price
of one roof, I don’t say out loud.

The mind is a funny thing.
It punishes the body, gives itself
a time-out for violations like coveting
or eating a grape without
paying for it and it can condemn
its master like a talk show host.

I don’t fight fair. I hang the last roof-
we-didn’t-need over her head like a judge
who’s not sure what sentence to hand out
but then hear about it all night whispering
from a voice that sounds like mine
but without the dry rot.

Houses will decay whether or not the
roof leaks, and the rains will end up
inside of what will eventually become
outside, so what are a few drops of water
between friends?
