Christa Mcauliffe

Erren Kelly

it was 1986, i was 19
first semester in college
i watched it on a t.v. in
the cafeteria, during lunch
the challenger space ship went
up, all looked hopeful, then

the sky fell....

i guess i shouldve realized that hope
was a chance you took, like you did
when you decided teaching wasnt
enough, you had to show people
that taking risks were necessary
to grow, and like icarus,

you had to see if your wings
were enough to get to
the sun

no one would’ve blamed you
for staying behind a desk
in a classroom
you had already contributed
to society

but maybe, you just wanted to
see
if space was as dreams
and vast as one’s
imagination

christa macauliffe was a school teacher from concord, new hampshire, who was one of seven astronauts, who perished, when the space shuttle challenger exploded on january, 28, 1986
