i remember once
when i didn’t have enough time
to wax my face before work

a customer looked at me and scoffed:
“you call yourself a woman?”

aye, sir, i do;

i have had menstral cycles since i was eleven
years old and i have had a miscarriage,
i have endured years of mansplaining and emotional abuse;
always people have tried to tame and cage me
so i am less wild—

yes, i am a woman;
maybe not the kind in your fantasy
but the type that exists in reality—

the one that dreams of being barefoot in the wild
surrounded by animal companions,
walking barefoot in the wood without narry a care
of how anyone percieves her body;

a strong woman isn’t something you’ve
likely met before but we exist.
