Final Resting Place

Phil Temples

Philo Wright is doing what he loves best on a bright summer day—piloting his single-engine Cessna craft over the skies of southeastern Massachusetts when, suddenly, multiple red lights flash ominously on his instrument panel. An experienced pilot with thousands of hours in the air, Philo knows he’s in big trouble. The plane starts to behave erratically, losing altitude like a stone. He also knows he’ll be unable to glide the plane back to New Bedford Regional Airport. Worse yet, Philo is flying over a densely populated area.
“Com’on, baby!” He verbally coaxes his craft to make it as far as Clark’s Cove where he can ditch it in the water without further risk to human life.
    But it isn’t to be.
Just one hundred feet above the ground, Philo quickly runs out of options. Below him, he spies the only clear patch of land devoid of homes—Rural Cemetery. With all his skill, Philo aims his incapacitated craft at the green patch punctuated with countless rows of limestone markers. As his plane hits the ground, its landing struts collide with several tombstones, causing the craft to cartwheel numerous times before coming to a halt and bursting into flames—adjacent to the Wright family plot.
