I never did learn how to make that guitar talk,
it stood neglected in the corner of the bedroom
until we had to sell it to pay off Christmas debts.
Thunder Road does not open for the likes of us.

Instead we settle for shift work and night classes,
fortnights in Greece, slowly growing waistlines
rapidly receding hairlines. The high price of IVF.

And yet there are always those cool winter nights.
Paydays when we walk back from friends’ flats.
Me with a with a bag of supermarket brand drink
You relishing a carton of chips with curry sauce.

We stop for a rest outside the old ruined church.
A wedge of moon illuminates your slim profile.
Time may be running out, youth may be ending
but for now, I can belive there is magic in the night.
