Difficult Choices

I can’t go back in time now
and live a different life
to the one that I have done.
I can’t now work harder
at rugby and football
and make the county team.
I can’t forge a different career
in another area.
I could have moved abroad
or lived somewhere else, not here.
I didn’t. I did none of it.

I can’t undo the past.
It’s too late for that.
I can’t write a different novel,
a better one,
or date a different girl.
I can’t have the home I never had,
or the happiness I only dreamt of.
I made my choices.
I’m stuck with them.
Some were in fact the right ones.
Others were perhaps wrong.
