I reached for the heights,
but fell way short.
Success could only be judged
in terms of monetary wealth,
as far as my mother and family were concerned.

That made me a failure,
by most means of judgement.
It made me feel inadequate too,
as if I should have done much better.
Trust me, I did my best.

I tried to get a novel published.
I endeavoured to go against the grain
and break the mould.
I tried to live a different kind of life
to everyone else.
Forgive me, if it didn’t all work out.

It wasn’t for want of trying.
I did what I could.
Sometimes that’s all that can be done.
I gave what I had to give.
In different circumstances,
perhaps it would have been enough
