Fire

DS Maolalai

cracks night
like the thick skin
of an orange.
outside
someone has set a car
to flame.

it goes fast,
burning
with yellow malice - it’s the seats,
they must have
oiled the seats or something;
they fire, cracking
with a red smell of merriment
and smoke pours out
thick as honey in jars.

I watch,
wondering
how long it will last.
it’s a side road,
but still, it’s drawing
people. police
and fire engines
cannot be far
away. on the car
the sides
and the bottom are smoking now;
it looks
like the tires
are just about to go.

the people are quiet
all wishing they had marshmallows
or hot dogs,
faces red flame
like hell
in an old woodcut.

it’s 11pm. the store
will shut soon. I go in
when the engine arrives
and the men
get setting up
their hoses.
I buy milk,
bread,
coke
and a donut.
go outside
to watch the rising
steam.
