Hell’s Kitchen

My mistresss
took me out
all George Raft-
sharp lapels

on her white suit
and spats;
she dolled me up
with silk
and held my waist
in her tight grip.
When I was growing up,
besides the bad guys,
who wore black hats
or didn’t shave,
most men had hearts
and were ordinarily built.
This was long before the
action figure came to exist
and spent most of his
time in gyms and hardly a moment
learning the acting craft.
The new enemy was not being seen
on screen as cut as could be.
Now they assemble
by our Roman ruins,
The Capitol buildings,

with rifles slung on their necks
and wearing open carry guns.
They like to compare their weapons,
hold each other’s stuff,
feel the weight of the handle,
stroke the barrel-
it gives them a rush.
I don’t think they’ve read
The Republic.
It’s why I let my mistress
bring me to her club
And let her girlfriends
make me toy
with their blue silicon
pricks.
Things even out then
like on the Autumnal Equinox.
