Flying home

Richard K. Williams

Through the porthole of the jet plane
in the dark at thirty thousand feet.
The land appears as amber diamonds
scattered across a black velvet cloth

Leaving my Angel in South Carolina
I’m flying north toward home. Wishing
I could scoop up a handful of those gems
to afford you a seat next to me.

Whoever said holding someone tight
will keep you warm all the way home.
Never had to change planes in Baltimore,
and never had to wait as long as I do
to see you again.
