Above the gray blue of the Atlantic
Off the South Carolina coast
Flying in surprisingly tight formations

They suddenly separate
Circling the shallow
Roiling foamy waves

Pausing briefly to glide
They abruptly turn, pitching down
Folding their wings they plunge

A pointed projectile
Smashing into the water
Sending up a fan of spray

From the porch
We could watch the pelicans
Fishing all day
