i’ve seen you at your worse

you made me hold my tongue
so much i swallowed all my words
it became too exhausting
to speak
when everything was going to be
held against me
anyway

bullied at school, bullied at home
there was no reprieve;
i felt trapped in negative thoughts
and abuse and i just wanted a way
out from all the pain—

but you broke my wings and took away
my freedoms and so i ventured into
nature, books, and music;
and found solace in every place that was
without you and your influence
every place that i could be myself
was a blessing

i will never forget how small you
made me feel and how you bullied me—
you said you were strict,
but you were needlessly so because
i was a good kid mostly;
feisty and fiery but you gave me no choice
because you were cruel and so angry all the time—

they want to tell me you’re a good man,
but i will never believe them because
i’ve seen you at your worse;
and i refuse to believe the best of you.
