Firefly in the Night
——To My Friend Jiao

Ziming Quan

It’s night
Gloomy, cloudy,
And little light can penetrate it
You are stumbling, frightened,
In this cold night.

Muddy road making your trousers dirty,
Cold rain making your clothes wet.

There are some stones blocking the road,
You are falling to the ground,
And you are trying to raise up,
Supporting yourself with willpower
Struggle—
Alas, but you still can’t untie the shackles on wrists.

There are some thorns scratching your skin,
Your tears are falling like rain,
And you are trying to escape
Breaking down in pain
Misery —
Alas, but you still can’t cut the ropes on feet.

It’s blood
Dark red, shocking,
Welling from your wound,
Mixed with rain
Dyeing your pure white lapel bloody red;
Dripping on the land
Blooming red flowers.

One day,
Rain will stop, winds will be gone,
There will be a
flicker,
Firefly in the dark night.
