Speaking of Daughters

He called the other night.
“My wife had a sonogram,
You know, to check out all that stuff
Because she’s over thirty-five.”

“Yeah, Steve, I know.
And what were the results?”

“It’s a girl! I can’t believe
I’ll have a daughter.
And her little hand
was reaching out.”

“She’s learning early, son.
I have two and know how it is;
You’ve got to learn it on your own.”

“Yeah, good buddy,
But I know the first thing I need—
A shotgun.”

“Yeah, a .410 will do.
And don’t forget your Daddy Glare.
You have a .410 shotgun
And a 10 gauge Daddy Glare,
And she’ll be all right.:

“Well thanks, man.
Gotta go now. Bye.”

The phone clicked,
The line went dead,
And I sat
Remembering
Little girls.
