I must admit
It would be lost
Among the Developmental English Folders
And Writing for Body Mechanics,

One wagon cannot circle—
Cannot ward off attacks from Elements of Chemistry,
Intermediate Equations, Welding Made Simple,
Obstetric Nursing, Electrical Wiring Principles,
Elements of Psychology,
Moby Dick and The Scarlet Letter
(all required for courses specified on shelf cards
And codified on computer print-outs
At the check-out counter).

But where does it fit
If not in a bookstore?

She asked,
“How many copies and for what course?
I’ve got to know the course and enrollment
Before I order.”

Must I strike a lyric fire in the bookstore lady?
How can I find her under the debris
Of requisitions and re-order forms.

How can I tell her
They need frozen music?
