Friggin Squirrel

Richard K. Williams

Poised on his haunches he leapt
from the ground to the edge of the birdbath.
Pausing briefly, perhaps to gauge the distance
perhaps to gather will, he sprang
from the birdbath to the birdfeeder pole.
Loudly clanging against the metal baffle
that is supposed to foil these attempts.

It does not. Instead, the black cone has become
a dinner gong, announcing the squirrels success
in defeating it. Rear paws clinging to pole
front paws clutching the suet cage dangling
from the upward curve of the shepherds crook
he’s stretched like a furry banner across
the hollow of the downward curve, feasting upon the suet.

When satisfied, he leaps off the pole
clanging the baffle again, announcing
his retreat. I observe this grey fuzzy-tailed ninja
as he subverts my efforts to keep him from my bird feeder
while I emotionally leap between amazement and amusement.
Friggin squirrel.
