Matinee

P. L. Grimaldi

I spent my childhood working and watching
In black and white
And in glorious technicolor and stereophonic sound,
In a movie theater, in a darkness without form,
As others brought their dates and practiced adulthood stuff,
I checked tickets, swept floors
Helped older patrons to locate good seats.
When other teens listened to the translation of life,
I worked for the bread, ignoring the voice of life,
I worked every day in the night,
In a darkness filled with
Artificial colors, artificial life and artificial art.
I spent my childhood working and watching
In black and white
And in glorious technicolor and stereophonic sound.
