Warehousing People

Selene Heidenreich

Yes Ms smith I see your light
I wonder
When do we start losing significance
25?
35?
45?
When children are born
to take our place?
When we start to grey?
Fine lines
And our teenagers threaten to put us in a home
Just a second Ms smith I’m getting Barbara some water
When do we lose or value
55?
65?
75?
When we become our medical conditions?
When we are the sum of our hospital war stories?
Just a moment Ms smith I’m giving Clyde a shower
When do we become invisable?
85?
95?
105?
When the government says so
Borrowing more and more
Never meaning to repay it
But that’s ok
Nobody should really live that long
Hold on Ms smith Agness needs to be changed
When they decide to take our voice
And we’re in a cell Between miss so and so
and mrs such and such
Talking about the grand kids
that didn’t call on our 95rh
But sent a card 3 years ago
The only one to say Happy Birthday
Is the jaded girl
Saying “i’ll do this
until I am this”
If she’d listen
The stories that could be shared
But folks in the premorgue
Have no form or voice
Ok Ms smith I’m ready now
