Hunger

Margaret Marcum

The hunger is deafening. It sinks
into your bones and bleaches them to black
smoke. Frigid fumes ruling the empty
veins down my forearm and out into the fibers
of the carpet

The room has turned to night, and the stars
in my solar plexus are fading

Drenched in flames
but can’t feel the heat—
sips of air won’t put out
the burning, rib cage,
skeleton of a butterfly

The only way to feel life is to take your own
and set it in the cabinets in a jar sealed tight
next to other broken things
