Two Photographs

P.C. Scheponik

There are two photographs of us that I like best.
One of our wedding:
we are standing next to each other,
my eyes downcast as if bowed in prayer,
yours, looking at me through your mantilla’s sheer.
We are such a perfect pair in that picture,
our love so complete, so rich, so rare.
I could look at that picture forever,
share our young joy with the world
that can never know who we are,
how we love, what we have.
The other is a black and white photo of you:
taken by your brother in the driveway of
our first rented house.
You are in a flowered blouse,
your hair pulled back in a pony tail.
You are holding the garden hose,
rinsing the car, determination on your face.
You are still so young, so true.
You are doing what you vowed to do
in that picture of our wedding—
always making better the worst in me.
You, always holding on, the way you are
clutching that garden hose,
always willing to see a way over and up,
no mountain too high, no valley too low.
You always cleaning up my act,
loving, waiting for me to grow
into the one I was meant to be,
the one still so in love with you.
