The Loyalty of Slaves

Iftekhar Sayeed

The observation that a slave can be king
Only where kings are rulers is more than
Truism; the Roman Emperors promoted
Slaves to the Imperial household, and so
Over empire; “Mamluk” means slave, and slaves
Were Emirs; Qutb-ud-Din Aybak and his
Son-in-law Iltutmish – slave and descendent –
Were authors of the Indian Slave Dynasty.
In a democracy and republic,
Such as were Greece and Rome and, later, Europe
And America, such goings-on
Were unimaginable: only despots
Would demand loyalty even from slaves
And out of jealousy seek their humanity.
