Little God

Wayne F. Burke

it was a murderously hot afternoon
in the
upstairs bedroom
where I squashed flies against the
window, using
a rolled newspaper, their
guts protruding through the
squares of the window screen;
they had to die, it was time
I had decreed—
the dumb ugly flies would long remember the
day and
me
their massacre at Bitter Creek
their body parts spread in the
trough of the window, I made sure
none survived to
seek vengeance, as if
they could, ha
ha
a hot breeze
like from an oven
blew across my face.
