New Kid

Wayne F. Burke

the new kid in school looked tough
had a dirty face
and cussed—
he came from the “Welfare House” across the
highway of death
and he scared me
a little
I was leery
wondered why he seemed to hate
my guts
he chased me down Howling Avenue
after school
I banked the corner onto my street
and thought myself safe
but he caught hold and
we wrestled on the
Carnazola’s front lawn
he got me in a head-lock
hard to break—
Susie Brown walked up the
street, books under her arm
I finally broke the hold and
ran—
later, she told me that
I had been smart to run
but
I did not think so—
in fact, I hated myself for doing it
and hated her too.
