Spartacus

Wayne F. Burke

I sit in the cushioned chair in the
semi-darkness of the theater, ornate
to my ten year old eyes
I am hit on the head
by a Juicy Fruit thrown
by a fat kid
behind me
I stand and walk to him
ask did he throw it
yeah
what you going do about it?
His ghoulish face lit by the
light of “The Vikings” on the
big screen, I hit him and
he sat as
the Vikings climbed the
castle walls...
The theater manager taps
me on the shoulder
motions me to follow
up the aisle
his office
walls of movie posters
he asks my father’s telephone number
he does not have one
how come?
Because he is dead.
Oh.
he asks my mother’s number
she is dead too
he demands to know who I live with
and I tell him—
he asks if my grandfather will come and
pick me up
he is in the hospital
he says go back to your seat
and behave
yes I will
I get back
to my seat
just in time
