The Power of the Sun

There once was an island where
The sun danced all day and the people
Danced with it.

At its water, guarded by golden gates,
Terrible thunderstorms fumed lanced with barbed raindrops.
Poisoned butterflies flew like angry wasps in circles,
And heat scorched the boundary, turning beach into desert.
The lightning flashed green, preparing to strike, while
Chills froze the ocean, paralyzing even the largest waves.

The people knew about the
Crumbling edges but continued dancing anyway.
“The gates will hold,” they said.

The forgotten storms
Roared on. No one knew how much those disasters
Could build. One day the tempest
Pushed through to the people under the sun.

They were overwhelmed
Yet amazed
At the sight.
For when you only experience sunshine,
The storms can be scary but...also invigorating.

The land raged for three days
With the newfound oddities,
Each one was destructive. Beautiful.
Then they cleared back to the water,
Leaving the land both
Damaged and cured.

The people living under their golden star
No longer only dance and play.
For now they bask in the warmth of the sun,
Feeling its light shine around and through them.
And, every so often,
They open the boundary gates once more.
