Line ‘em up

Patrick T. Reardon

Gravestone calculus, flesh rots alone.

Shoes line sideboard,
sons, daughters line driveway,
short to tall, maternal sacrament-sign.
Grace to someone.

At hospital bed edges, sons, daughters,
voice from pillow to silent one standing,
“Say something,”
add to word line, her scripture.
Told talk.

Down Loop sidewalk line
blood-muscle-bone clumps
step lone paths,
next to, ahead of, in, out, across,
back, forth, stilled, rushed.

Bread always broken, decay of geometry.
