A Cage to Call My Own

Robert S. King

Coming through one of my walls,
It’s a Wonderful Life plays:
A woman shares a laugh.
Children bump and jump for joy.
The suction of loud kisses vibrates
the spirit of a short season.

From the opposite wall, science fiction
comes true in black and white:
Gray lords laugh about their wonderful life.
          Harmony is bigotry.
Children are toys and toys are money.
          Vampire kisses suck the wonderful
life from those without.

To which wall shall my ear be suction cup?
The merged fictions in the middle confuse:
          Mothers hate those they love.
          Children are cruel but sweet.
Fathers have beating fists but also hearts.
          Killings are balanced by kisses.
                    Everyone is two.
The iron bars prove that I am too.
