I am a silent rebel, frozen here
Trying hard to look the other way.

          I hear you scold and persecute your child.
          My heart cries out in pain.
          I watch you shake and grip to tightly
          a tiny little being, where a soul resides.

Oh punishment—born from a moment’s anger,
a lesson taught in vain.

          “Be gentle,” I long to say, but no words come.
          I know, when it was my turn
          I was quite like you.
          Wisdom shows itself ironically today.

The graphic imprint of years gone by
evokes such conflict in my soul.

          Memories choke away my words.
          With great authority you blame and demand;
          you learning to parent—
          your subject learning to rebel.

Silently, I too rebel for this parody
will repeat itself again someday.

          Your child, then the parent, a reflection of you,
          your grandchild the victim of anger.
          Suddenly, you’ll find yourself a silent rebel
          trying hard to look the other way.
