Michael Ceraolo

While a flag that would later inspire
famous doggerel was still flying,
forty miles away the nation’s capital was being sacked
and the White House and Capitol set on fire
(the Capitol also held the Library of Congress)
The President and the rest of the government
fled twenty miles away to Brookeville, Maryland
But history (and subsequent poetry)
doesn’t happen in a hermetically sealed environment:
many times it is affected by the weather,
though such is rarely mentioned
And so let us sing the praises of
The Storm That Saved Washington:
a severe thunderstorm (possibly a hurricane)
that spawned a rare tornado
and whose rains put out the fires
and chase the book burners back
to their damaged ships,
allowing the government to return
