I’m Tired

Kathleen Kempert

    I’m tired.
I’m tired of the world I live in with the news full of stories that infuriate me or make me cry.
I’m tired of my friends with Black or biracial children worrying that when their child leaves the house, they may never come home.
I’m tired of my colleagues hoping that their job titles and education will be enough for people to see past the color of their skin.
I’m tired of my students wondering if something happens to them, who they can call to protect them.
I’m tired of my friends saying that if they get pulled over, they feel they need to have their hands up when the officer comes to the window and not make any sudden moves.
I’m tired of people crossing the street when they see a Black man or woman walking their way.
I’m tired of people responding to “Black Lives Matter” with “All Lives Matter” when with each passing day it is more and more evident they do not.
I’m tired of people saying “it’s the world we live in.”
    No.
This is not the world I want to raise my children in, and I refuse to do so.
I want my children to speak up when someone is wrong.
I want my children to march and protest against racial injustice.
I want my children to advocate that American history be taught correctly.
I want my children’s generation to be the one that stamps out racism.
Hate is a four-letter word, but so are love and hope.
    We can do better.
We can teach our children better.
    We can be better.
