I shoveled no snow in Pennsylvania
this past winter

but I did bury my mother in Florida
in the same season

so labored with a load heavier
than a shovelful

of snow no matter feather-powder
or weighty slush—

even in the welcome breeze
of seventy degrees,

the hibiscus flaring red-orange
upon surprised northern eyes,

palms waving easy greeting
in faux-summer skies

the mass returned to the earth
made more than muscles freeze.
