only candles were
lit
their reflections
danced around the
room

to me there was
something more calming
about flames floating

than the blinding vision
of unnatural light,

it felt more natural
like moonlight or sunlight;
it soothed me
despite the lightening and thunder
outside of wooden walls

i felt safe—

no one could read my expressions
or unravel a story i didn’t want to tell,
no one could ask me to say something;
i could sit in the calm of disquiet
and watch the flames dance more softly
than the thunder.
