Wounded

“Leave me!” you say.
Like a wounded animal crawling
off into the woods to curl up alone,
you pull away from me.

My heart crackles like a scratchy record
on an old phonograph. I hold back.
I leave you to tend to your wounds, alone.

My fingers explored
a bullet scar on your shoulder,
I imagined you in a war, broken, alone.
Love, I want to believe, heals.

You want to be alone.
You believe strength,
healing comes from inside.
That is how you want it.
My pen leaks words
that you will never hear.

Running like a wounded bunny
dripping blood in the snow,
Do you make a sound in the night?
Is there a wailing moan that comes
from the depths you have traveled?

You stifle it, I’m sure.
No one should hear, no one should come.
You will never see the words I carry with me.
The thoughts of you I write down here,
the ones I’m forbidden to speak.
