Honey on the Couch

Kevin Riley

Soon after I gently pat the red
leather sofa, Honey wags her curly tail
and leaps up beside me fondly, if sluggishly.
She curls into a fluffy semi-circle and rests
her chin on her paws.

Who can blame her torpor? The Douglas
fir burns fast and hot in the woodstove
this almost Spring evening and she is worn out
from a day in my office listening to comfortable grown
men complain about their mothers.

But Honey bears no ill will toward
the practitioners of the psychological arts
or the clients they service. She takes the broader view.

Looking around at the tidy living room and her full
bowl of kibble, she lets out a deep sigh and laments
her first wolf ancestor who lurked too close to camp and got fed.

She imagines the small bands of humans living
interdependently in the forest, knowing nothing
is assured and everything is alive.

She wonders what becomes of a culture
That annihilates the shamans, banishes
their medicine, devours the songs.

And replaces them with psychotherapy
and other rituals of devotion to the nuclear family,
the consumer and the Almighty Self.

Ahh...but the fire is warm and the chilly Oregon
rain blows against the windows and Honey
doesn’t want to think about all that right
now. Her eyelids sink. There are dream squirrels to
chase and tomorrow is another big day.
