Pom Pom Meltdown

L.B. Sedlacek

When that first gray hair
starts to show,
I’ll tell myself I’m too young
-- whether I am or not --
for mini-vans, baby car-seats, breast feedings in public
-- which have become to me as natural as breathing --
I used to see other women doing
those things, I would laugh
-- because I never thought it would happen to me --
thinking only of stealing change from my brother’s room
to order a pizza delivered straight to my door
-- when I used to believe in the stork --
I thought babies came the same way
-- how could I have been so misled? --
until I learned that, the only one who sees the gray is me.
