This is where it fails

A cigarette that is
more ash than tobacco
just like its smoker
is more skeleton
than flesh

Sagging tenement
porches
filled with generations
tired of waiting

A baby
crawling towards
a pistol

but when she or he
gets to it

it will no longer be a toy

The Dollar Store
only has two people
working tonight

And most likely
one of them
will call in sick
which means the
one working the
register gets to be
the corpse

Amazing how quick
that baby grew
