Syrians, Unsung

Susie Gharib

Our long-running plight has gone unsung.

We have braved waves of darkness
with breaths forming icicles on Winter nights.
An embargo on fuel is meant to chastise.

Many tumbling rockets had been shirked by the populace.
The mothers of martyrs have Jacob’s shirt.
And showers of bullets have not hermetized us.

The soaring prices have aggrandized the loaf of bread.
Bananas are crescents that arch above our heads.
An embargo on medicine has not massacred us yet.
