Al Salerno

Michael Ceraolo

I had dreams of being a major-league pitcher,
but I got hurt in the service so it didn’t work out
After a few different jobs,
I succeeded in becoming a big-league umpire
I enjoyed the job, but after finding out
that the National League umps, who were union,
made more money than we did,
I, along with Bill, tried to organize us into a union
Somehow word got back to Cronin about it
and he fired us for being “poor umpires”,
as if no one knew the real reason he canned us
Bill and I filed suit; they offered to settle,
but insisted we prove ourselves all over again
I wouldn’t do it; I was fired up
and wanted the League to pay for what they’d done
But we lost in court, and my life would never be right
I wrote letters to baseball officials,
which increasingly went unanswered
I couldn’t hold a steady job because of health issues,
and I’ve often wondered if those issues
were caused by the ordeal
I hope that bastard Cronin got what he deserved
