Vestibule

John F McMullen

Some have, I’ve been told,
taken umbrage at my use of
the word “cunt” in my poems.
One person wrote that “cunt
is the word women hate most”.

Even though it’s a generalization
(women have also used the word
in their poems), I can understand
the statement because many men
use the word as a curse (something
I can’t understand since it is also
what most men want most).

(Aside: I was sitting at a table a
few years ago when a woman
stormed away from the next table.
As she did, I heard a man say to
another man at the table “Nasty
cunt!” Startled, I inadvertently
looked at him and he explained
“She’s my wife”. Ohh .. hmm)

I like the word and the other words
that people use for that body part
annoy me; “vagina” is too medical
and “pussy” makes me think of my cats.

But, recently, I came across a word that
catches my fancy - “vestibule”.
It takes its origin from the Latin
“vestibulum” meaning “entrance court”.

Vestibule is used both as an architectural
term and as an anatomical one —-
always meaning the “entry place”
and therein lies the beauty of the image.

This vestibule should be the entry place
not only into a woman’s body but
also into her soul; a place where spirits
touch as well as bodies.

and, hopefully, I’ll never hear anyone
say “Nasty vestibule!”
