Heavy like a paving stone
The image portrays
Serenity but somehow sad

An English cottage, single room
Cramped and crowded beneath
Deep beamed ceilings

A pedestal table centered
Cloth covered round
A book lies open on top

On the floor a cat and dog
Warmed by a huge hearth
Kettle heating over the fire

Platters line the mantel
Bed warmer, powder horn, horseshoe
Decorate the brickwork

Curtained window, umbrella stand
Beside a forbidding wooden door
Grandfather clock stands sentinel

Watching over an elderly woman
Enveloped in a tartan robe at the table
Peacefully dozing in a Queen Anne chair

It’s an ancient look into
The not too distant past
From a country I’ve never visited

Manufactured sometimes in the forties
Its paint is chipped, faded
It’s been broken then repaired

It’s place was in her kitchen
Thick ceramic relief casting
Gives it a 3D effect

As a child I could vanish
Into that tiny room
Looking at it for hours

I still enjoy looking at it
As it hangs in my dining room
Reminding me of Nana and my youth
