Sitting In The Woods On A Rainy Holiday

I am off work like most people in America
under a wide canopy of gray rain
chills haunt the air  shake me inside

There’s a poem beneath me about a war
an image of a boy sitting
at the end of an ash mountain
with his head in a man’s hand

Before my sight are the shadows of leaves
and burnt beef pulled from the fire
and my family  the war  I know too well
long blurred black white
