The Wreckage You Left Behind

Yesterday we drifted into the chilly meeting room
at the funeral  branches into the sea
We did not whisper about the wreck  he left behind
instead of how much he left us all  to bury him with
the keys to his house  the power of attorney
his passion for wine  and memories of his children

Today  none of you are really there
you’re still ghosts at the table  Between us
you look past my father’s ashes
like it’s your own reflection
I have not yet grasped them  stirred
nor have put them on display  somewhere special
as a glass case in my dining room
